an explanation

What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are the large ropey veins seen in the legs and spider veins are smaller red or blue lines. A vein becomes varicose when the valves in its wall malfunction and fail to help bring blood back to the heart. Veins are thinner and much weaker than arteries, and they may enlarge in response to pressure or, more commonly, or as a result of a genetic predisposition. Untreated varicose veins only worsen: the increased pressure in enlarged veins results in further enlargement.

What are spider veins?
Spider veins are the thread-like veins seen on the surface of the skin. They are usually less painful than varicosities, but without treatment may bleed or worsen. Although most commonly seen in the legs, spider veins may be present on the face and other parts of the body. These spider veins, medically referred to as telangectasias, do not become bulging varicose veins, but may progress locally and become a cosmetic problem. Ironically, because they are on the surface of the skin, small veins may take longer
to heal (disappear) then large veins.

EVLT® Treamment for Varicose Veins

Microphlebectomy
This procedure is a minimally-invasive method for removing varicose veins. The procedure requires only local anesthesia without hospitalization. Using special instruments, the veins are gently removed through tiny skin openings about the size of a pinhead. Unlike vein stripping, no stitches are needed and virtually no scarring occurs. The results are quick and cosmetically pleasing. There is relatively no downtime and discomfort is minimal.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy of spider veins is a relatively simple procedure that requires no anesthesia, so it will be performed in an outpatient setting, most likely your doctor's office. A typical sclerotherapy session is relatively quick, lasting only about 15 to 45 minutes. Your doctor or nurse will begin injecting the sclerosing agent into the affected veins. Bright, indirect light and magnification help ensure that the process is completed with maximum precision. During the procedure, you may listen to music, read, or just talk to your practitioner. Patients are pleased with the difference sclerotherapy makes. The skin of your legs will appear younger, clearer and more healthy-looking. Often, patients are surprised at the dramatic difference in appearance between a treated leg and an untreated one.
